Visual Perceptual Skills Addressed:

Spatial Relationships

Spatial Relationships perception is the ability to identify the position of two or more visual stimuli in relation to oneself and/or in relation to each other.

In the “Airport Code Story” worksheets, the student must analyse how the dots and the dashes relate to each other, in order to search for the same code. For example, the dot is between the two dashes, or there are two dashes followed by three dots.

Visual Discrimination

Visual Discrimination is the ability to identify differences and similarities between two or more visual stimuli by analysing their individual characteristics and distinctive features.

In the “Airport Code Story” worksheets, the student must compare the features of any similar looking codes, in order to distinguish between them.

Figure Ground

Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (to locate the important stimulus without getting confused by the background or surrounding images). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.

To complete the “Airport Code Story” worksheets successfully, the student must focus on one code at a time within the busy field of all the other codes on the sentence sheet. The student must also be able to find the particular code that they are looking for in the code list on the left hand side of the page.
