Visual Perceptual Skills Addressed:

Figure Ground

Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (to locate the important stimulus without getting confused by the background or surrounding images). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.

In the “Alphabet Circling” worksheets, the student must focus on one letter at a time within the busy field of all the other surrounding letters as they scan for each of the letters of the alphabet in turn.

Form Constancy

Form Constancy is the ability to recognise any given visual stimulus as the same despite changes in its presentation, such as, size, colour, texture, direction, orientation or context.

In the “Alphabet Circling” worksheets, the student must recognise the letters of the alphabet despite the fact that they take on a different form from one worksheet to another (20 variations in font in total).

Visual Discrimination

Visual Discrimination is the ability to identify differences and similarities between shapes, symbols, objects or patterns, by analysing their individual characteristics and distinctive features.

In the “Alphabet Circling” worksheets, the student must compare the features of any similar looking letters, for example, “E/F” and “D/O”, in order to distinguish between them.
