Visual Perceptual Skills Addressed:

Visual Discrimination

Visual Discrimination is the ability to identify differences and similarities between two or more visual stimuli by analysing their individual characteristics and distinctive features.

In the “Colour by Letter” worksheets, the student must compare the features of similar looking letters, for example, “y/g”, “a/o”, “s/z” and “h/n”, in order to distinguish between them.

Position in Space

Position in Space perception is the ability to identify the position of any given visual stimulus in relation to oneself.

In the “Colour by Letter” worksheets, the student must analyse the position of all the letters that are a mirror image or a reflection of each other in relation to their own body, in order to discriminate between them. For example, “b/d”, “p/q” and “t/f”.

Figure Ground

Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (to locate the important stimulus without getting confused by the background or surrounding images). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.

In order to successfully scan for each letter in the “Colour by Letter” worksheets, the student must attend to one letter at a time within the busy field of all the other surrounding letters.
