Visual Perceptual Skills Addressed:

Visual Discrimination

Visual Discrimination is the ability to identify differences and similarities between two or more visual stimuli by analysing their individual characteristics and distinctive features.

In the “People Shadows” worksheets, the student must compare the features of each of the colour images to the features of each of the shadows, in order to match them. This will encourage the student to notice other elements of the image besides the colours, which are often telling clues for distinguishing between similar images. In these worksheets, the student is forced to analyse the shape or outline of each image to find its match.

Figure Ground

Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (to locate the important stimulus without getting confused by the background or surrounding images). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.

To complete the “People Shadows” worksheets successfully, the student must attend to each image in turn within the busy field of all the other surrounding images.

Visual Motor Integration

Visual Motor Integration relates to the coordination of visual perceptual skills with body movement (the use of visual information to guide a motor task). For fine motor tasks, the eyes inform the arm and hand muscles where to go like "follow the leader”, so that motor output matches visual input.

In the “People Shadows” worksheets, the student's eyes must guide the movement of their hand in order to draw a line to connect the colour images to their corresponding shadows in a fluid and controlled manner.
