Visual Perceptual Skills Addressed:

Form Constancy

Form Constancy is the ability to recognise any given visual stimulus as the same despite changes in its presentation, such as, size, colour, texture, direction, orientation or context.

In the “Shapes in Different Positions” worksheets, the student must recognise the same shape as the example in the box at the top of the page, despite the fact that it varies in form (change in position/angle).

Visual Discrimination

Visual Discrimination is the ability to identify differences and similarities between shapes, symbols, objects or patterns, by analysing their individual characteristics and distinctive features.

In the “Shapes in Different Positions” worksheets, the student must compare the features of any similar looking shapes, in order to distinguish between them.

Figure Ground

Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (to locate the important stimulus without getting confused by the background or surrounding images). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.

To complete the “Shapes in Different Positions” worksheets successfully, the student must attend to one shape at a time within the busy field of all the surrounding shapes.
