Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (not confusing the background or any surrounding images with the important stimulus). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.
In order to complete the “Zebra Letters” worksheets successfully, the student must filter out the visual distraction of the “zebra lines” in order to focus on the letters. In order to search for the letter stated in the instruction, the student must attend to one letter at a time within the busy field of all the other surrounding letters.
Position in Space
Position in Space perception is the ability to identify the position of any given visual stimulus in relation to oneself.
In the “Zebra Letters” worksheets, the student must differentiate between letters that are a mirror image of each other, such as b/d or p/q, by using their own body as a reference point.
Visual Closure is the ability to recognize any given visual stimulus from an incomplete presentation (part of the stimulus is missing). The ability to identify what we are seeing without having to analyze every detail enables us to process information in our environment quickly.
In the “Zebra Letters” worksheets, the student must mentally fill in the parts/pieces of any of the letters that may be concealed by the “zebra lines”, in order to identify the whole letter.
Visual Discrimination is the ability to identify differences and similarities between two or more visual stimuli by analyzing their individual characteristics and distinctive features.
